Our Programs

Friends is proud to announce that we now have two distinct programs which serve children in the Walla Walla valley in different ways and in different settings - our CB (community-based) Program – the flagship program that has been operating since the inception of the organization in 1999 – and our new, school-based ABC (Adults Befriending Children) Program that matches adult volunteers with children on school grounds during school time. Although each program emphasizes safety, consistency and ongoing support and includes our rigorous screening process and volunteer training, the programs retain specific processes that reflect the particular service model utilized. Additional information regarding each program:

The Community-Based (CB) Program

Our community-based program continues to contain the large majority of our friendships. Built on a volunteer commitment of weekly contact for one full year, the CB Program offers all sorts of opportunities for fun in the Walla Walla community. Whether it’s playing chess, throwing a ball around, going to a movie, bowling or just taking a walk, the focus is always on the relationship and the young friend’s interests. At the same time, from many personal stories, our friendships give as much to our adult volunteers as to the children we match. These friendships are truly life-changing for both parties.

The School-Based (ABC) Program

Our school-based program, located in three College Place schools, is a collaborative effort with College Place Public Schools and Walla Walla University. It provides the opportunity for volunteers to spend time with their young friend during lunch time, enjoying activities on school grounds in the company of other children and school personnel. The commitment is for one full school year – a year filled with fun in the familiar environment of the child’s school.
