Mentoring Children of Incarcerated Parents (MCIP)
The MCIP program is part of a national initiative to stem the rising tide of second generation entries into the Criminal Justice System. Did you know that one in ten children in the U.S. has a parent who is either incarcerated or on probation or parole? Mentoring children who have an incarcerated parent are less likely to be incarcerated as an adult.
Friends of Children of Walla Walla, in partnership with the Washington State Penitentiary, the
MCIP addresses a high priority need in the community by reaching out to at-risk children ages 6 to 17 who have a parent incarcerated in jail or prison. Friends understands the importance of a friendship with an adult for these children and will also refer children who live in other areas of the state to MCIP programs through a statewide network.
"Old friends pass away, new friends appear. It is just like the days. An old day passes, a new day arrives. The important thing is to make it meaningful: a meaningful friend -- or a meaningful day." -- Dalai Lama
