A friend is someone trustworthy and reliable, a good listener, a responsive adult, and a guide.

A friend is NOT a savior, a foster parent, a therapist, a parole officer or a cool peer.

As an adult friend with the Friends  program:

  • I will enter into my friendship with an open mind and a willingness to learn.
  • I will accept input from the Friends staff and advisory board in order to improve my abilities.
  • I will attend a readiness training, refresher training, and ongoing events as are required and appropriate for my friendship.
  • I will keep matters confidential (within the program) concerning my young friend and his or her family.
  • I will be responsible for my volunteer work and act with proper consideration for those with whom I work.
  • I will have monthly contact with the Friends staff regarding my experiences with my young friend.
  • I will ask questions about anything I do not understand.
  • I will advise the Friends office of any changes in my situation (address, phone, employment, family).
  • I will notify the Friends office of any extended leave, special circumstances, resignation, or desire to be matched with an alternate young friend.
  • I will make a legitimate effort to meet weekly for 1 hour and to be on time for appointments with my young friend.
  • I will participate in an annual screening of my criminal history information.

I will do my best to fulfill my responsibilities as an adult friend as outlined above. When necessary this agreement will be reviewed by the Friends  staff and myself, any perspective changes will be made to this agreement at that time. I acknowledge that I have received and reviewed the Friends activities and policies form.  I fully understand the responsibilities of this position and the code of conduct that is expected of me as an adult friend.
